Water Quality Issues

"Buzzards Bay remains one of the healthiest coastal ecosystems on the East Coast. But a major change is underway along its coastline which threatens the health of the Bay’s nearshore harbors, coves and tidal rivers. Buzzards Bay’s future is significantly threatened by increasing nitrogen pollution. Today, more than 1/2 of Buzzards Bay’s harbors and coves are suffering from nitrogen pollution."

Buzzards Bay Water Quality Signs

"Graphical trends of the water quality data we (The Coalition for Buzzards Bay) collected over the past twelve years were displayed in new fiberglass Buzzards Bay Water Quality signs. 127 signs were produced through a grant from the Massachusetts Environmental Trust and posted at boat ramps, beaches and bridges throughout the Bay. Each sign is harbor-specific and details the local health of the waterway in terms of excellent, good, fair or poor in yearly increments from 1992 to 2003."

The Bay Health Index measures the nitrogen-related health of each of Buzzards Bay’s major
